A recent survey conducted in the southeast has successfully confirmed that one of Ireland’s rarest and most elusive birds, the nocturnal Nightjar, continues to breed in the country, though in very limited numbers. The good news was posted on 18 October 2024 on the BirdWatch Ireland website here. This is welcome news given the absence of any confirmed breeding records for a number of years and is testament to the work of the survey team and project funders. Hopefully this work can be expanded to other counties in the coming years.
