Status All Ireland:  Breeding (Republic only)
Population estimate all Ireland: < 10 pairs
Trend (12 years): Increase
Trend (40 years): Stable

Survey timing: May to June

Habitat: Rivers & lakes

Occurrence: Counties Wicklow and Carlow along large rivers. Has bred in Donegal.

Habitat preference (simple description of preferred nesting habitat): Needs combination of relatively large river with mature trees close by. Also freshwater lakes and loughs.

Preferred ways to establish breeding status: Nests in tree cavities and nest boxes. Suitable nest sites (large cavities) few and far between – sometimes in Scots pine close to river. Can be secretive. Presence of both male and female a good indication of breeding. While female incubating, best time to see both birds together is early morning and evening. Seeing female lead young on water easiest way to prove breeding. Early morning recommended if the river / lake is frequented by people.
