Status All Ireland: Breeding very seldom (Northern Ireland only)
Population estimate all Ireland: 0-2 pairs
Survey Timing: May to July
Habitat: In Ireland in the breeding season confined to one very large lake.
Occurrence: Lough Neagh, where the species bred in 1997 and possibly/probably in 2017
Habitat preference (simple description of preferred nesting habitat): No Irish nest has been seen, but it is presumes to be in ground cover, close to freshwater bodies.
Preferred ways to establish breeding status: Search for adult female escorting young on water.
